Karun Dibyendu Banerjee is an Indian cardiologist and the director of the department of cardiology at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences. He is known for his research on Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases. He is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, India. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 1990, for his contributions to medical science.
Biography
Karun Dibyendu Banerjee, born on 11 October 1945 in a Bengali family in Pabna, in the Indian state of West Bengal, did his graduate studies in medicine at the University of Calcutta and completed it in 1970. He obtained a master's degree from the same institution in the same year and secured a post graduate diploma in internal medicine. He moved to Kolkata for his higher studies where he completed his post graduate work and earned a PhD in 1975 under the guidance of Sajiv Gandhi.
